Chemistry (with Labs)
4 Credits

Introduction to Chemistry (SCI-105) consists of 8 modules that include assigned readings, lecture videos, PowerPoint presentations, assignments, and online laboratory activities. Students should read all assigned textbook material, review the PowerPoint presentations, watch the assigned videos, complete all required assignments, and participate in the laboratory activities as directed. Completion of both the lecture and laboratory components will help prepare students for the final examination. This course contains a lab component that is satisfied by the laboratory activities described below.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Perform calculations necessary for the study of chemistry, including the use of appropriate units, significant figures, dimensional analysis, percentages, and density.

  • Describe atomic structure, isotopes, electron arrangements, radioactivity, and trends on the periodic table.

  • Distinguish between ionic and covalent bonding, draw basic Lewis structures, write chemical formulas, identify polyatomic ions, and name chemical compounds.

  • Perform calculations involving moles, molar mass, Avogadro’s number, and balance and classify chemical reactions.

  • Describe molecular geometry, polarity, intermolecular forces, energy, and changes in the states of matter.

  • Identify the special properties of various solids, liquids, gases, and solutions.

  • Apply the gas laws to calculations.

  • Describe solubility, electrolytes, solution concentrations, osmosis, and dialysis.

  • Describe chemical equilibrium, distinguish between acids and bases, calculate pH, and explain titrations and buffer systems.

  • Identify common organic functional groups, hydrocarbons, and isomers, and describe basic organic nomenclature, properties, and reactions.
